Thus far an excellent opportunity to reach back into the stores of Old English that I remember from college to try to puzzle out what the Scottish writers (Chapter 1) are talking about, since Lewis offers no real assistance in that. It helps to sound them out - same words, just spelled quite differently.

The whole book to this point has been at attempt to set the stage for the writers of this time. I'm just starting chapter 1 now.

$12.99 hardcover at the Portsmouth bookstore. I couldn't resist, even if I don't get half of the references he's made so far.

Off to a good start. House to myself, a choice of Raspberry OR Lemon Zinger tea (oh the luxury) and a lovely new pillow to prop into the corner of the couch to get back into the adventures of Emily and Wendell.

My God. Deprogramming through forcing McDonald's food on a vegetarian, to bring him back to American values. What a 70s concept.

So now I've got one that I picked up from Mom's library (thanks to her I knew about Ted Bundy and Charles Mansion before I was a teen lol)

Just an observation that the author invariably uses the term "Indian" to describe the native american/indigenous peoples demographic. Just kind of odd, in this day and age, to see them described as such by a writer.

... interesting how the term "melungeon" was substituted for the term "gypsy", with eastern American parents threatening bad children that they'd be taken away by them. Swarthy "Indian" features (like my own grandfather's); I wonder if perhaps this is the lineage of many in that particular category.

i know how important each detail is in folktales and myths; it doesn't make them any easier to read though.

Time to give this a try. It's such a pretty little book and my sister gave it to me for Christmas so I should buckle down and do it.

I know the movie well enough, so that I'm having fun comparing the dialogue between that and the book.
