how did the author of poppy war, one of the best fantasy series I've ever read, write something like babel, so boring and mid? I'm honestly so disappointed with it. been reading it for 2 months because I genuinely couldn't be bothered.

why is this so unbelievably long

so far this is giving "I'm fifteen and this book is my introduction to critical thinking and colonialism, therefore it's amazing". idk, feels pretty shallow. and the magic system ruins the whole thing. could be easily done without it.

kinda crazy that absolutely nothing was happening in the first 100 pages and now it just turned by 180°

really don't like the friend and her daughter and I especially hate how the dialogue just goes in circles for a whole page before actually getting somewhere. what's up with that?

the space around us is a claw half grasped, holding tight without quite crushing, and I wish that I felt more confident in my ability to breathe.

I thought it would be a horror, something like the vvitch, and the vibes sure are there, but it turned into a tale where a woman is frolicking in the forest with the devil but he's actually not mean, he's telling her to think of flowers and sunshine and the bees make honeycombs for her within a day.
and there are animals with infant heads and it's all just really power of friendship cringe.

this book actually pisses me off so much what the hell

don't really connect with the story or the characters. it deals with topics i never really gave much thought, and it doesn't bring me any new perspectives.
i'll probably finish this since i want to give the author a fair shot but so far i'm more bored than anything.
