the 'Pierre' short story is probably the worst one so far. I am feeling so nauseous, I don't think I've ever experienced something similar. What the fuck.

i just started the first short story and I cannot really figure out why Anaïs' works are viewed as empowering and feminist, when the first story is about a man sexually assaulting two children, playing sex games with them while they have no idea what's going on because they're THAT little. so far I am disgusted, and not in a 'breaking a taboo' way, just in a 'this woman is a perv' way.

this whole book is just very very bad storytelling. I'm not even talking about the fact that it reads like a YA fanfiction, I'm talking the absolute gullibility of the main character and the fact that the author has probably never heard of 'show, don't tell.'
one of my biggest pet peeves is writers not trusting the readers and just explaining everything to us like we're 5. and the plot twists are so fucking lame.

hazel must be one of the stupidest main characters I've ever come across. she does not put two and two together, even if the answer is right in front of her. she makes speculations based on one thing and ignoring the other hundred proving her speculations wrong. I'm so tired of this. this reads like a ya, like a fan fiction. I wanted a gothic, serious book about Mormonism in the 19th century. got a love story.

I usually don't mind 'no plot just vibes' books but they have to give me SOMETHING. there really is nothing happening. this could've been an email.

how did the author of poppy war, one of the best fantasy series I've ever read, write something like babel, so boring and mid? I'm honestly so disappointed with it. been reading it for 2 months because I genuinely couldn't be bothered.
