For any fans of Poe or Léon Bloy, I’ve just finished a Gothic short story in their style (which perhaps owes a little too much to the former’s “The Man of the Crowd”) - oh well, Happy Halloween anyway! If you’re interested, here’s the link to it — hope you enjoy! (No opium required)

Just finished The Turn of the Screw because it’s spooky season — never in my life have I read a prose style that I associate so much with indigestion, it’s like James kept hiccuping and burping up asides and recriminations and second thoughts in each and every sentence he wrote. Let’s see if the Aspern Papers is as sexually repressed as this — but before that I need to rewatch The Innocents.

After long holding off the inevitable I've finally done the most shameful and reprehensible thing I could think of; I've created a Substack. If you're at all interested, you can find me here:

Terrible title (he references Hans Richter, but the man himself was so dismissive of the term “anti-art” that to use it as the basis of the neologism “anti-philosophy” seems to me ridiculous) but great essays, especially on Derrida and Lessing (the latter helping me tremendously to deal with the outrageous antisemitism of Klages, whom I’ve been reading as of late).

When will these FUCKWIT publishers learn how to properly cater to middlebrow idiots like me - yes I’m interested in Beckett’s prose, it’s beautiful and really strange here, but I’d be happier if you did violence to it and its multilingual subtlety by translating it into ENGLISH. To not have three pages entirely in French is not asking too much, is it? I’m not translating it myself, that’s your job !!

Unfortunately, against the better angels of my nature, this still ranks as some of the most exciting philosophy I’ve ever read - I don’t care if it’s wrong, it still feels right. (will likely be on my “currently reading” shelf for a hot minute, I have no intention of rushing through the essays in here I’ve neglected over the years).

100 pages of drudgery, but now we’re cooking with gas babyyyyyy. Finally back to the fundamental question of being after some of the driest shit ever - someone should have given ol’ Heidegger the philosophical equivalent of a colonic.
