Two stories down. The first one was solid—it didn’t knock my socks off but it was enjoyable and well written. The second one though was just not good. Actually pretty terrible. It lacked focus and I had a hard time understanding what was going on and what the point of most of it was. I loved the other Munro collection I read (an easy five ⭐️) so I’m hoping this last story was an outlier.

A long, meandering, immersive read. I’m loving it!

Pleasantly surprised by how much I’m enjoying this one. Troy is a good storyteller and his humor is perfect.

JFC. I already wasn’t loving this book but then the author felt inclined to include a scene where the families stumble across a croc attacking a killing a fawn. Good lord. Couldn’t we have found some other way to turn Scott into a hero?! 😂😒

An absolute stunner of a book so far.

Just finished story #4. I’m obsessed with this book. It’s grotesque, foul, and hysterically funny. Read at your own risk. 😂

The first story was absolute 🔥

I have no idea if the rest of the collection is as good but damn, that satire. I was belly laughing twice. So good.

Chapter 2 introduced us to Wendi, whose unhousing situation unfolded years before Evelyn. Wendi’s initial story spans 1996-2006 and it’s difficult to discern yet if the immense differences in her experience differ from Evelyn’s experience due to the year it took place or other circumstances. Just as engaging as Evelyn’s story. This will undoubtedly be a five star read for me.

One chapter in and I had to force myself to put this book down last night. Evelyn’s story of being unhoused is harrowing and compelling. You want it to work out for her but Hobbs makes it clear that things will get worse before they get better.
