Austin is 25% done with »Ich wünschte, dass ich Ihnen ein wenig fehlte«: Briefe an Lotte Zweig 1934-1940
Slow going...
I feel like this is going to add to existing thoughts about the limits of service. Lee in East of Eden is an example of service work brimming over into domesticity and parenting and care. Here, service turns into romance? How exploitative are both scenarios? Odd to read only Zweig's letters and just one--of dubious accuracy--of Lotte's.

Honestly, so refreshingly good so far! Prose is competent and the premise is more exciting than manyy other contemporary novels…

page two of the preface - HELL YEAH did you just scientifically disassemble the act of your writing and then our reading into every one of its constituent physical reactions and thereby evoke how miraculous it is that humans communicate with each other and exist at all?! let’s go

“While returning from a trip to Palestine in March 2015, the governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, said ‘Theres’s really no such thing as Palestinians.’”

the shit runs deep and still ppl act like it’s not their problem, it’s too “distant”

Story of your life was stellar — really love this kind of story. Concepts from physics (Fermats principle) and examples from linguistics (lang. acquisition, the possibility of a different grammar, perceiving the world as teleological rather than sequential) wrap together in the life of the narrator to express something that feels very true and very human.
