Slow start, but Kuang really did her research. I've learned a fair bit about the UK in the 1800s. Interesting stuff.

Buh. I wanted to read this because I enjoyed the Netflix show and a friend says the book is pretty different in parts, but something about the narrative style kinda irks me. Maybe it's because it's been translated from Mandarin? Maybe it's just a style of writing that I'm not familiar with?

I dunno. I'm plugging away at it, but I also keep losing track of all the different chinese named characters.

While I mean to finish it, the tension and dread the narrator feels can be mentally taxing. Defined as a short story, 134 pages still feels like a fair amount, especially when written in such an archaic style.
