Not enjoying as much as previous books. The language is a lot tighter, but I enjoy the extra description.

So far boring as hell, and just...flat. The character interactions are realistic in that they are dull.

Glad I started reading this on the 19 November!

Yawn. Mark Watney - again. This author cannot write diverse characters.

I loved this book as a child. It's pretty dark for a kids book to be honest

Is this written by an American or is the edition I've got American? Some jarring language.

Maybe it's because I'm reading this in 2025 where women are being imprisoned for seeking abortions, for speaking out against men in our spaces, and for doing anything outrageous like seeking an education, that I find this book quite chilling. Not to mention the reviews from Christians upset that they are the baddies, seemingly oblivious to the fact that in history, it IS the religious extremists who do this!

So far, by far the best I've read from Lehane. Achingly sad.

I had a memory on Facebook that I finished this 13 years ago today, I can't remember a thing about it so thought I'd give it another read! I rated it 4/5 on Amazon.

Enjoying this so far. The characters are well-written, and feel rounded out. They have their foibles but unlike some authors, they haven't been given some frankly unpleasant characteristics to make them seem more real.

As a mother of only sons, while nothing too scary has occurred, this has given me nightmares.

Intriguing. But having read more than one book by this author, I have a feeling I know what's going to happen!

Funny so far, for such a horrible subject matter.

The big reveal is ridiculous. Shouldn't have been surprised knowing Picoult's other books.

Prosecco? In 1950s England?

I've just started the second part of the book, 1951.
It would seem that the author is unfamiliar with any area of Boston, London or Maine, as there is no description of any place. However - she's clearly been to New York as the singular trip there has some detail!

The English/American English wordings continue to grate. We don't use 'fall' in the UK. And neither would a 1950s woman refer to being 'beat'. Irritating

I really wish that Americans writing about the UK (and vice versa) especially in historical fiction, would have a UK editor. It really jars when you're reading about a small child in wartime London who goes out to play at recess and has her hair cut in bangs.

I'm only 5% through and I can already tell this is a book written by an American about a very unique British experience of being evacuated during WW2.

So far this is VERY creepy.

I’m almost half way through and enjoying so far, although to be honest a whole lot of nothing has happened.
It is filled with the usual MMS characters - the protagonist ex-cop turned something else living in the country, the clever wife, the ever-present Nick Golson…that being said I like MMS as a writer so not putting me off!

So far this is really good. It’s interesting to read from a teenager’s perspective, and the slow burn of the end of the world.
