Oh my gosh, Tae! This has nothing to do with being brave! How can Colt's low self-esteem, from blaming himself for his mother's death since he was six, add depth and nuance to his character while Tae's consistently makes me hate her more than I already do!? "Waaah! I'm no hero. I'm not brave." She consistently has these thoughts at the worst times for me to see it as anything but self-pity.

"He was a brute, but she loved him, loved him for his very brutality and superb animal strength."

I don't believe you, book. You can't give me a consistentlu, realistic depiction of trauma from the heroine and then turn around and say, "Ah, it was love sneaking up on her unawares."

RIP, Silver Star. You were a real one.

I understand that Mrs. Warren had Tae be a dumbass in the first chapter so the plot could happen, but I still haven't forgotten or forgiven. I hate Tae. You deserve better, Colt. I wish you were spending time with your brothers and dad instead.

"I want these people to believe me. So let me explain the plot with a dramatic and vague sentence that sounds crazy and then not clarify a thing."

Seriously!? No one asked any follow-up questions? And where's the vital backpack she almost killed them all to get because she couldn't wait for Colt to search the plane? Still in the plane. Which is at the bottom of a lake. At the bottom of a glacier. Good job, Tae.

I didn't listen to my own advice and now I don't kind of hate Tae. I hate her.

I'm going to have to wait until I'm in a better mood to continue this book.

I liked Tae in Sunburst. I was eager to finish that book so I could get to this one and see more of her and Colt. And now, in the first 20 pages, I kind of hate her. I don't think I've ever lost earned goodwill for a character (the female romantic lead!) so early in a book before. Good job, Mrs. Warren.

Just for a fleeting moment I thought of Mrs. Symmington and Agnes Woddell in their graves [...] and wondered if they would agree, and then I remembered that Agnes' boy friend hadn't been very fond of her and that Mrs. Symmington hadn't been very nice to Megan and, what the hell? We've all got to die some time! And I agreed with happy Miss Emily that everything was for the best in the best of possible worlds.

"Yes, it was dangerous, but we are not put into this world, Mr. Burton, to avoid danger when an innocent fellow creature's life is at stake. You understand me?"

I know the window she goes through are the french windows referenced earlier but I love the image of Mrs. Dane Calthrop climbing through a normal window very much.

Not gonna lie. That love confession is rather swoonworthy.

Sorry, Vivian, but I'm pretty sure that even if his heart hadn't been full of Sari, he still wouldn't have touched you. In fact, you only had the chance to enter his bedchamber AND meet him at a banquet because of Sari. Bedroom: Sari ran off after an arguement and he had the wards down for when she came back. Banquet: Anubis is desperately trying to get his King to take a Queen who isn't a human.

"Allies in Maidenly Love!" I would kill for Princess Amit.

"...I'd like to be eaten by Your Majesty." That's pretty a bold come-on, even though it's not meant sexually.

I've heard this sentiment in various ways from so many people. Many of which aren't white. And it's not always race-based. This applies to people who only want to interact with people who have the same politics or the same religion or the same denomination or the same interests, etc. Tribalism is an easy thing to slip into.

Mencken and Nietzsche seem like they'd be insufferable after an hour or two of conversation. Nietzsche less so.

I get that Roberta has good points since racism is so prevalent in the story, but I really feel for Tommy. Anytime he has a good time with the white kids, Roberta is sulking in the background and then chews him out afterwards. Stop taking out your angst over being "weird" on your brother juat because he knows how to have fun.

Again I want to thank the translator who decided “Hecka cool!” should be used in this story.

I want to note my appreciation for whoever decided “He ran hella fast.” was the appropriate translation. It made me smile.
