Screwtape letters meets Trainspotting. Interesting concept. Good book.

I have very mixed feelings about this book so far. It has a great premise and is twisting in really interesting ways, but I kind of hate all of the characters. Also, iPhones barely last three years, so a hundred years is too long to stretch the imagination, and snowy kale does not equal Utopia. Not for anyone. Seriously. I'm sticking with it, because, again, fascinating premise, but it has some issues.

It's not been a good week in books for me. I have a DNF, a book club book I strongly disliked, but managed to slog through, and a narrative nonfiction that could have made a brilliant novel, but as is, is just plain boring. My favorite book of the week is a book in verse, which is weird, because I kind of only reluctantly read those most of the time.

I don't get it. I haven't been this frustrated reading a book in a long time and the reviews are fantastic. What am I missing? There is very little scene in the book. It just reads like some guy at the bar is dumping his story on you even though you keep trying to tell him you're not interested. If it weren't a book club pick, I'd fling my drink in his face and go home.

I think I might be over reading novels that feature academics complaining about academia. Is it just me?

I hate to give up on a book, I really do, but I just can't with this one. The writing is lovely. The story is, well, um, confusing? Boring? Disjointed? And evidently there's an abrupt ending that will leave me dissatisfied. Guess I won't bother to get there. On to the next!
