Stacey is starting A Drop of Corruption (Shadow of the Leviathan, #2)
Before there was memory, before there was history, there were the leviathans: the colossal, monstrous creatures that lumbered ashore each wet season and went wondering the plains, bringing death and panic with them.

I'm so excited about this book!

My mother was never one for shame--not for wallowing in it, anyway. Pick up your luggage, learn from your mistake, and pass on--that was more her line.

She was suddenly acutely aware of just how remote the cabin was. If she went missing, no one would know until she failed to return home a week later. The police would take hours to reach her, even if she could call them, which she couldn't. Any defense would have to come from her own hands. Happy Spooky 👻 reading month!

There was no such thing as being a magician's assistant without knowing the trick. People are misguided by the assistant's surprise, the way her mouth opens in childlike delight as her glove is turned into a dove. But if you didn't know how it would all turn out, you wouldn't know where to stand, how to turn yourself to shield the magician's hand or temporarily block the light.

People never seemed to take into account that they can say no. In Sabine's life she had seen people who truly, desperately did not want to be called onto stage, who begged to be passed over, but when they were pressed, they always went, resigned, as if to their deaths. When the magician asked, no one ever thought to tell him to go to hell.

They call it a cafe'. People just sat around drinking it from these little ceramic cups, and I had to try it, and.. it was like drinking the feeling of being peaceful. Being peaceful in your mind. Well, not if you have too much, then it's something else. ☕️🤎🤎

Words had a way of getting into all sorts of places they weren't meant to be. Best keep things to yourself in life, he learned.

She knew that if a wife lost a husband, there was a whole new word to describe who she was: she was now a widower. A husband became a widower. But if a parent lost a child, there was no special label for their grief. They were still just a mother or a father, even though they no longer had a son or a daughter. That seemed odd.

There are times when the ocean is not the ocean--not blue, not even water, but some violent explosion of energy and danger: ferocity on a scale only gods can summon. It hurls itself at the island, sending spray right over the top of the lighthouse, biting pieces off the cliff. And the sound is a roaring of a beast whose anger knows no limits. Those are the nights the light is needed most. 💙

It's never enough, is it? Time. We always think we have so much of it, but when it really counts, we don't have enough at all.

The world could be beautiful -- and it showed on the walls of the tea shop with the pyramids and castles and waterfalls that seemed to drop from the greatest heights -- but it was also brutal and dark.

The first time you share tea, you are a stranger.
The second time you share tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share tea, you become family.

Death is sometimes so discreet that it steals in noiselessly, stays for only a moment, and carries off its prey, and I didn't notice the change. When I was certain that it was all over, I lay there for a long time, holding her to me, as she had wanted.

Labor had been...God. Like something else entirely. Almost medieval. I remember every moment of it. There is actually a place where you can go where pain is unbelievable. And everybody is casual about it, and will leave you in that state for hours, will tell you to pull yourself together and push, after thirty hours of it.

The tricky part of illness is that, as you go through it, your values are constantly changing. You try to figure out what matters to you, and then you keep figuring it out. It felt like someone had taken away my credit card and I was having to learn how to budget.. Death may be a one-time event, but living with terminal illness is a process.
