the writing in this is so... weird. it's very passive, there are few contractions, everything is long-winded paragraphs of self-reflection... for so many people to herald this book as amazing is confusing me! idk if i'll get much further tbh

super enjoying this so far; it doesn't require too much knowledge of ancient rome and some of the nauances are subtle reworkings, like the city being founded by remus rather than romulus. i do wish there was more lgbt diversity though, but we'll see how the rest of the book turns out - this book is what sabaa tahir's trilogy tried to be, but better. the characters so far in AN UNSEEN FLAME are incredible so far
