Overall this book wasn’t for me, I don’t think. While I found patches of it charming and compelling, as a whole I found it overlong, overwritten and over-hysterical. I’m not sure I particularly liked anyone involved in it and I periodically found myself putting it down going “...this is silly”.

I last read this somewhere close to 20 years ago and spent most of it cross that it wasn’t a direct sequel to Howl’s Moving Castle like the cover sort-of claimed, but I’m going to give it another go now, see if I can up that rating a bit.

Mills & Boon have rebranded a bunch of their Cornwall-set romances to look like Poldark rip-offs, which I am so up for. This one is great so far: the mining bits are handwavy but the trash emotions are STRONG.
