Frances Trollope and some of her children came to America to visit in 1827. Her observations of American society formed by going up the Mississippi and on to Cincinnati in those wild west days is not, so far, at all complimentary. This is a good contrast to de Tocqueville's observations.

I won't finish this book, I can tell. Read this much and neither Daniel nor the one who actually seems to be the main character, Gwen, intrigues me.

I'm reading this slowly because I'm learning so much. Not the usual Chaucer biography at all.

Susan Davis is on page 50 of 249 of Persuasion
The beginning of Persuasion is a send up of the vain father, Sir Elliot. It was amusing but progressed slowly, especially since he doesn't play much of a part in the plot.

Susan Davis is finished with I Am Watching You
Intriguing mystery. What I like is that the characters are all normal people. The central character, a woman who saw an incident on the train, is just a normal woman, not stronger or prettier or more intelligent than the rest of the world. And then she's the only 'witness' to a crime. It's the kind of thing that could happen to anyone.
Interesting how all the threads that looked so disparate were tied together.

By this time in the book, the reader knows who did the deed. So what's the last quarter of the book for. I think I know, but I'm not that interested in what's coming.
Well, I was wrong--not about what was coming but about the interest. The last quarter is exciting and the ending very satisfying.
