I do not understand a legal system where 13yo's call the shots, and a foster parent cannot take away privileges, even in the interest of safety. If you know your 13yo is smoking, drinking, using pot, why would you give them pocket money? AND, if a 22yo is groping, kissing, and supplying the illegal substances, why isn't he in jail? US-British culture and laws must be very different.

If you know your 13yo is smoking, drinking, and smoking pot, why would you give them pocket money? AND, why allow contact, instead of pressing charges against a 22yo who is groping, kissing, and providing her liquor and drugs.

My second attempt at this book and I still cannot get into it. It is a slow narrative, with little dialog and interaction between characters. The book is very flat... it describes hair, shoes, etc, over and over, but doesn't adequately convey the emotional fallout of the horrors of the war.

There are many novels that tell an intricate story, interweaving the historical facts of WW2 as the platform.

Slooow start. I am 4 or 5 chapters in and not connecting with this book. I loved "The Last Bookshop in London," so I am disappointed. I am not sure that I will finish.

I am so excited to read this book. I am absolutely fascinated by the important role that libraries and library staff played in WWII. Why is this not taught in school?

Hmmm... Not crazy about 2 completely different storylines.

Loved Part 1 and Part 2. I am struggling with Part 3. I don't want to give up, but going to set aside for a week. The Dutch House was a much better read.

It is so beautifully written that I stopped to commit some passages to memory. I have replayed some chapters to further reflect. This isn't just a great story. This is a moving, spiritual reflection.
