the author focuses too much on the “inaccurate” opinions of the interviewees and not enough on the accurate alternative. when she’s explaining new concepts or countering inaccurate understandings, it’s not done in a straightforward and clear way, leaving the readers slightly confused over the facts and her opinion. while I understand this book is discussion & conversation starter, it just wasn’t sufficient

while I appreciate the holistic view of the systemic racism and affirmative action policy discussed in the book, the overall book did not flow as well as I would’ve liked. each chapter read like an individual research paper that repeated ideas and exact sentences from previous chapters. some ideas were shared in indirect sentences that were hard to decipher. the ideas are great, but could’ve been more succinct.

1/5 This reads like a first draft dissertation where nothing is substantiated by research. Arguments are made on assumptions that, at most, are corroborated by her personal circle of relationships. The generalization of many of the concepts and gross dramatization of what our society views love as felt merely like an angry outburst on her end, and not a book that provides true insight to love.
