Lack of behavioral and emotional control is biological, not behavioral when there was substance exposure or early childhood complex trauma.

Rates of ADHD and significant mental disorders are drastically higher in this population.

Emotional regulation is as important for learning as it is for relationships. Prioritize social-emotional learning over academics.

My take away from Ch. 8- be more consistent and thoughtful with extrinsic motivation. Don't think of them as bribes. Neurodivergent children need to be convinced they are capable and this may need some good consistent motivators. I skimmed several sections that were not very relevant outside of the classroom.

Chapter 7 dealt primarily with school reform and was mostly irrelevant to our situation.

Chapter 6 is mostly geared toward educators working with kids in a classroom setting but there are some valuable nuggets that apply to the home as well.

Finally getting to the help and strategies. There is hope. The first 4 chapters were very informational but so heavy and hard to read-clearly since they took me over a year to get through.
