Somnambulant urban wandering. The city is desubstantialized, the trains are sleeping beasts. There are only appearances with nothing but the starry night sky behind them. Calvino wanted to subtract weight towards lightness, this is the melancholic's execution of that operation. Lightness without transcendence, without escape. Where are you going?

Bataille, Glissant, Laplanche, de Sade, Blanchot, Adorno, Kristeva, and Bersani all name dropped in the first few pages... so off to a good start.

Bersani is "attempting to re-imagine the subject and and to invent what Foucault called 'new relational modes.'" He "takes Foucault's summoning us to rethink the relational as a political and moral imperative (a precondition to durable social transformations)." Feels very sympathetic to Kaja Silverman's "Flesh of My Flesh."
