what a medley of (sub)genres and settings. it's gone from travelling France romanticised medieval (almost want to say Hobbit) style, to Jane Austen society scenes, to shockingly theatrically bold tragedy of impossible lovers (almost Shakesperean?) and now in the middle of trapped in haunted (scary!) Gothic castle x Italian ROBBERS??? what a novel, i love

my hot take of the day is that the main theme of "Emma" is "l'enfer, c'est les autres" - can't believe i was so ignorant during my previous reading

this is big fun !! really do agree w/ esther saxey though that its definition as a lesbian novel isn't fitting like a glove - So Much gender churn experience going on, i LOVE.
