what a medley of (sub)genres and settings. it's gone from travelling France romanticised medieval (almost want to say Hobbit) style, to Jane Austen society scenes, to shockingly theatrically bold tragedy of impossible lovers (almost Shakesperean?) and now in the middle of trapped in haunted (scary!) Gothic castle x Italian ROBBERS??? what a novel, i love

my hot take of the day is that the main theme of "Emma" is "l'enfer, c'est les autres" - can't believe i was so ignorant during my previous reading

this is big fun !! really do agree w/ esther saxey though that its definition as a lesbian novel isn't fitting like a glove - So Much gender churn experience going on, i LOVE.

(even if this accidentally occurred thru hall's futile attempts to justify/ fit lesbian love to catholic conventions of hetero love.)

"Human-reality is a constant surpassing toward a self-coincidence that is never given"

some philosophy pains but overall, really enjoyed 'the immediate structures of the for-itself' analysis of consciousness. [?] regarding "The existence of desire as a human fact suffices to prove that humanity is a lack"; intuitively that sits well at first; do wonder abt Buddhist possible counter-arguments targeting sufficiency.

a) some fangirling and enjoyment
b) waves of 'is reading this self-hatred & can i stop'
c) question: anyone else seeing a hidden narrative in which sartre is in love with pierre? just saying: if we made some of the more lyrical illustrations/analysis of nothingness a poem, it so would be giving (unrequited) romance and mourning
and d) for dislike for frigid woman and homosexuality "insights". it's a No. from me:(

so i found the german 1985 edition in a cardboard box on the street but apparently not deemed cool enough to make an appearance on goodreads. [the audacity, fuming]
