Loved the bit about keeping Gatorade on hand since you can get so heated practicing.

Cristina is reading The House of the Spirits
I'm putting this on hold for a while, I'm taking a break since it's such a lugubrious read. I'll go back to it when I'm ready for a lengthy read challenge.

I think one can summarize this novel as far as I can tell by saying that the author Louis- Ferdinand Celine knows how to use an exclamation point. I think that the translation from French to English is good, really holding my attention. We'll see when I'm done!

I'm going to say that this story is not depressing although one would think it would be since it's mostly about how this man who is 38 years old and has never left home (Baltimore.... although there isn't that much about the city which you would know based on the story in the sense that so far everything has to do with ppl and not the city itself, the ppl of the city so to speak).

So far I'm enjoying how there are a few stories going on at once and I really like the running themes or mix of Ancient Egypt, Astrology and Modern Psychology. Part Two will probably hold my attention greater than or more than Part 1.

I had to start reading this mystery to take a break from all the other books I, reading which are really difficult. This one seems like a good fast paced story that holds my attention.

Complex mystery so far, I'm getting drawn in but it's taking work. Not sure why exactly will give more details later.

Cristina is reading The Octopus: A Story of California
Well I just returned this book back to the library in a sort of huff after getting up to book 2. This is because it doesn't feel right to finish it right now and I'm waiting til the fall to finish book 2. Then we'll get to the rest of the story that includes more conflict of the wheat farmers vs railroad -- The Iron Octopus.

I'm so glad I finally a, reading this historical novel. Been wanting to since '03ish when I saw many compiles on shelves at a small environmental liberal arts school in VT. Very intrigued by the title of course and it seems like am under the radar "Grapes of Wrath".
So far the descriptions of characters are what stands out the most as well as descriptions of the CA landscape.
