I’m actually…sad????

“Lord Wind Master, why don’t you put down the broom and we can talk things out?” has got to be the hardest I’ve ever laughed at a joke in a book in my life.

Even two (?!) years later, this book slaps. It’s incredible how long this series has had a hold on my brain.

This book is INSANE. One minute you’re laughing, one minute you’re hopeful, then the next you’re trying not to burst into tears. “The universe has no light in it anymore.” Excuse me while I go die.

Okay, but why is the audiobook so fucking funny? James Fouhey, I underestimated you.

I listened to over an hour of this audiobook and it straight up wasted my time. I think the female narrator was excellent; absolutely carried the book. But the male narrator? He’s so terrible I’m DNFing. Arg.

I can’t BELIEVE how badly Robbie butchered the names of the Portuguese dishes in the narration. God knows I love him

Is Robbie using the weirdest, high-pitched voice to sound like a little girl??? Why????

I just want to honour how much of this book I read before giving up. It really could’ve been something, I think.

I really enjoyed the first quarter of this book, but now I don’t know what’s happened; I don’t think the wedding/marriage makes any sense, and the banter between the two leads while they’re in the river hideout just isn’t working for me. Honestly, he should’ve just kidnapped her; that’s my hot take. But the reviews for this book are overwhelmingly positive, so clearly this is working for most people?

“Three Trees to Midnight” was quite good! I liked meeting Strife and Irelin here. This was probably a 4.5 star rating for me; no real critiques.

This book feels SO LONG but I do have fun when I’m reading it? Some of the new characters are also BANGERS.

I feel changed. I have to force myself to stop reading this so I can eat and sleep.

This book is terrible. So terrible. The humour is for children, for degenerates; I can actively feel myself getting stupider as I read it. It’s wildly misogynistic, purposefully gross, and cleverly written for men on Reddit who have never known the smell or taste of outside air. I want to kill the timeline I’m in that allowed this to exist.

This book is somehow problematic in so many ways all at the same time. Racist, sexist, drowning in aggressive, toxic masculinity. The humour is also absolutely ridiculous (derogatory), since it’s written for a very specific type of nerdy, D&D bro. It’s fun to make fun of, I guess? But also deeply aggravating. Alas.

Hilariously, this book gets the characters of “Green Eggs and Ham” mixed up

I am SHAKEN. I knew what was coming and I’m still so upset. I was so invested, and I cared so much about everyone. It was terrible. Everything is terrible. But I understand now, why everyone loves this. And Hunt? Yeah, I get it. I do. We’ll see how things go.

This is probably the silliest nitpick, but there’s this one line that really stood out to me. “There was really no other explanation for why it had taken ten minutes to type out a two-sentence email that day. Letter by letter.” Uh, my girl, all things are typed out letter by letter? Haha.

NOW the mystery is interesting, but I miss Ravi!! I wish he was in the story more.

Maybe I don’t know criminal law as well as I should, but Max being at the memorial makes no sense. He’s on trial for kidnapping; he would be under arrest, surely? Escorted to and from the court house each day? Even if he had been out previously on bail, I don’t think he’d just be allowed to walk around town while the trial was going on? Where all his accusers/victims live? Is he not a flight risk?

I feel like this book is missing some connective tissue. The prologue asks a question about Pip and Razi’s relationship that still hasn’t been answered, and now Pip’s investigating a disappearance that just happened, which feels serious only in a very contrived way. Pip just…has a popular podcast now. Saw blowback. Is struggling post-obsession. I just wish we had been shown more of that!

Ha. The idea that Andie’s body, found in a septic tank five and half years after her death, would still show signs of brain swelling and asphyxia is hilarious. She would absolutely just be a pile of bones with no soft tissue remaining, and asphyxia leaves no supporting evidence on a skeleton. A nitpick! But that feels like an obvious error.
