Very interesting so far. A book that constantly has you thinking about how different a life can be from the "mass" life most of us live. Taking a short break to inject a non-fiction book, it's a long read and I'm slogging a bit in the middle.

Monster book. has some slow spots but when it's good, it's really good and now I'm committing a half hour a day to it every day I'm making some ground ツ

this book should be required reading by everyone. it will change the way you see trees. change how you feel about forests and maybe that will spiral into a few other changes too. I'm loving it.

dave eggers said in the intro i'd feel compelled to caring for gilmore before the murders happened. i didn't, and i don't. i find him a good symbol of the arrogance of the individual and little more so far. however, nicole, his life love, is very interesting. whore, mother, in love with a murderer, she's the thing that keeps the book going.

what a monster of a book. this is my first of mailer and the writing is so heavily "of the time" it was written it's slow going. the vernacular is painful and i get he wanted it written in the "voice" of the people who lived it but it lacks any elegance and feels a bit like reading a white trash biography so far.

i initially started recommending this to everyone. now two hundred pages in i still think it's an amazing book but most people will phase out before they can absorb it. it opens so vividly, but then meanders (if you like historical meandering, great). this guy is a great writer. depth, breadth, patience. but his pacing is off. the heights are high, but the slower sections will cost him average readers.

laying explicit, almost ironic, term and scope, upon term and scope with a subtle but internally terrifying pace. he's destroying whatever is tacit in his topic and i went to bed deeply frustated by human hubris.

i remember why i stopped reading this. this book, unlike his first is in dire need of a rigorous editor to force him to ask why does this sentence, or word matter. i like his stories so im doing my best to ignore the shabby writing--but thats tough.
