Connie and Jazz have a conversation about Jazz's mother and his feelings about her. Jazz gets home to find Melissa at home and she is very rude to her to get her to go away. Jazz falls asleep and later at night G William knocks on the door and tells Jazz that he was right and it is a serial killer.

Jazz gets kicked out of the police station and is late to school. He cannot attend play practice because he was late and this upsets Connie and another girl working on the play. The father of one of the victims tries to get Jazz to tell him his daughters last words.

Jazz and Howie are looking at the field trying to find clues. Jazz discovers that the killer came from a different directions and finds a ring. Then the perspective switches to the killer that has his eyes set on the next target.

Jazz reflects on his mother and his feelings toward her. Howie and him go to the field because Jazz is determined to solve the murder. Howie reassures Jazz that he is not a killer.

Jazz and Melissa go back and forth and Melissa insists that Jazz should move out and think of himself. He convinces her to go away and he goes inside to find his Gramma with the shotgun. He talks her out of shooting him (even though the gun is plugged) and makes dinner for the two of them.

Jazz and his girlfriend Connie are hanging out together at school and Connie gets made about Jazz breaking into the morgue. Connie gets over it by the time they go to play practice after school. In the parking lot a father of a victim confronts Jazz and makes him think about the past more.

After Jazz falls asleep we see the perspective of the serial killer and they are watching Jazz from across the street. In the morning, Jazz and Howie go get coffee. There is an annoying reporter there who is seen as the expert on Billy Dent.

Jazz and Howie get caught by the new cop. G. William lets them go with a warning. Jazz is concerned that he will turn out to be like his father.

Jazz and Howie are looking at the body. Jazz thinks it was a serial killer because of all the things he learned from his dad. Howie does not like being there that much but he stays to be Jazz's support.

We see Jazz look on a crime scene and try to figure it out. We learn that Jazz is the son of a infamous serial killer. Then Jazz goes to the police station to try and figure out what happened.

Malala is adjusting to life in Birmingham and feels homesick a lot. She skypes with her friends back home. She has a few more surgeries to get and is almost back to where she was before the attack.

Malala is getting better and she has learned that her shooting was world news. She has a surgery to fix the side of her face she cannot move. She gets released from the hospital, but she cannot go home.

Malala is getting better and can talk a little. Her family finally comes and they are shocked by her appearance. They all start to heal together as they tell Malala what happened to her.

We get to where Malala was shot and she does not remember any of it. She is in the ICU and she cannot talk and she can barely move. All she can think about is how is she going to pay for the care and where her father is.

The Taliban is seeming defeated and Malala and her family can go home. Things return to mostly normal and Malala starts to get awards for her speeches. With these awards also comes death threats from the Taliban.

A peace treaty is imposed and it introduces Sharia law, but there really isn't peace. Malala still continues to sneak off to school and learn as much as possible. More people are being beaten and killed as the Taliban moves closer to the capital.

Life is getting worse and it seems school will be shut down for the girls. Malala's life is starting to get more publicity and she becomes a secret diary writer. There are also interviews where she shows her face to many people.

Malala's city slowly becomes taken over by the Taliban and they are all scared. Her father stands up to the Taliban and tries to enact change in the government. The army arrives and drives the Taliban back slightly, but they still cast some control over the city.

As Malala grew older there are some changes in Pakistan. After a big earthquake a party called the TNSM slowly started to take over using radio broadcasts. They spoke about women's schools, short hair, music, and western aid being harmful and bad.

We learn of Malala's childhood and how different it was. Her father praised her and treated her like she was a person of her own. Malala is very confused by the way most women are treated and does not want to be like most women in Pakistan.

We are introduced to Malala and her family. We see they have have a nice family that is educated and happy. We start to learn that because she stood up for women's education something bad happens to her.

Tally tells everyone her secret that she was a spy. David gets upset and leaves. Tally says she will go to the city and become pretty so they can test the cure on her.

David and Tally surprise the specials and manage to rescue everyone, including Shay who was turned pretty. We learn that Az died, but we aren't told how. The New Smokies spread rumors among the uglies and more and more people show up to learn about the abuses of the city.

David and Tally plan on breaking into Specials HQ by jumping over the tall sensor with bungee jackets. They find uglies that help them by distracting the Specials. David is sad about the loss of the Smoke.

David and Tally trek back to the city and they worry about what might be happening to the Smokies. They get into the city and try to find a way into the Specials headquarters. They come up with a crazy idea.

Tally makes it out of the Smoke and away from the Specials by going in a cave. She manages to find David in that cave and together they try to find anyone left. They don't find anything except burned ruins, and they leave to go rescue everyone from the city.

Tally tries to outrun the Specials, but she gets caughts and penned up with the other Smokies. She tricks the Specials by pretending the hid the locket and steals a board. She is trying to find David and escape the Specials.

Tally and David talk for awhile and he calls her beautiful and they kiss. She destroys the locket and decides to stay. When she wakes up in the morning the Smoke is surrounded by special circumstances.

David's parents talk about how they found lesions in the pretties brains. This is why pretties are easily swayed.

Tally and Shay get in an argument when Shay realises that David likes Tally. David and Tally talk and she gets close to telling him the truth, but she doesn't. David takes her to met the founders of the Smoke, his parents, Az and Maddy.
