There better be a damn good explanation about Del at the end of this novel.

"The parish priest governs the nation. What is the King, then, if the parish priest withdrew his support and deny his authority? Merely a shadow and no King; let him resign."
Oh, so good!

Finished Part One. I'm reminded why pride is the most deadly of all mortal sins. No matter how "Christian" a person proclaims themselves to be. The south is obviously prideful and wrong, but what I love is how we see not everyone in the north who professes their stance against slavery actually cares. It's a way to make themselves feel important or to pursue their own gains; their northern pride.

It's definitely an epic. I knew that before I started reading, but I did not expect the vast amount of characters. It's slow building, but that's ok for this type of book. I am very curious how everyone and everything is going to connect besides the obvious upcoming civil war, which is 20 years away. Ooooh, baby, talk about house divided.

I will finish it, and I am learning a lot, but tragically I will not be reading or recommending Brooks' books to anyone. Ever. The reason is because of misrepresentation and understanding, which I shall go into detail in my review.

So far, I like it, but there is ONE PROBLEM.

Divorce VS Annulment.

Queen Eleanor eventually ends her marriage to Louis VII. By annulment. The author keeps referring to it multiple times as a divorce and writes like that's what it is; she only mentions Annulment once. Queen Eleanor NEVER had a divorce! It's completely different, and greatly misleading. Brooks didn't take the time to study the difference.
