I really value the tone of this book. There is a very human sympathy that doesn't idealise or engage in sensationalist hyperbole. I find it nuanced and constructive.

The narrative voice and dialogue in this book is too inconsistent. It moves back and forth between ornate grandiosity and quite pedestrian language, and this doesn't come across as deliberate.

I think it was released prematurely, but had great potential.

Having just finished reading this book's plentiful snarky prefaces, I am really hoping that the tone of the text itself will be less draining.

I'm quite relieved that George Eliot was Strauss's translator, as she was conscientious in moderating his vitriol, but I also now better understand the weariness she acquired via the project.

It's an extremely influential book, but gosh, I'm not excited about continuing.

I just finished the section on the first Commandment. I anticipate rereading this book many times. There is such a lot there.
