I see no real reason for her to make anything up, as she's not seeking fame, so I'm going to go with the theory that this is a true story and continue on from there. I only remember the really exciting/traumatic events of my 5-7 year old self, so it makes sense that she would retain what happened to her at 5, even if it seems a little far-fetched.
