I can’t begin to describe the cruelty, creepiness, and lack of self-awareness it takes to host a “JonBenet party”. It’s not a funny, Quirky Girl (TM) decision. This little girl was raped and murdered and these two PhD-Having Women (they won’t let readers forget) voyeuristically celebrate her abuse and death.

I desperately wish Amanda had asked native speakers or experts how to pronounce the non-English names of people and places… it’s pretty bad and not what I’d expect from such a widely traveled person D:

Her observations about gender and her own feelings about herself are interesting. But there’s so much here that is sad and horrible to read- knowingly soliciting sex from married people, purchasing services from a young Filipino boy, musing that “art has looser morals than regular life” to justify the inappropriateness of taking pictures of unknowing subjects.

I’m blown away by Meredith’s hypocrisy. She laments throughout the book how assumptions are made about her based on looks that both benefit and hurt her, but she also literally states she is disgusted by her mother’s lack of beauty and judges prospective sexual partners and even friends with single glances.

It feels like someone should have noted in the editing process that Agnetha Faltskog isn’t American.

Characters are horrendous. After a fight, Rami and Robin are reconciled because Robin “was the only one of them who had killed a colonizer”- his own father, who had nothing to do with the British government or colonization. He was just a mean white man. But it makes Rami like him again. WTF

Panda Urban is starting War Lord (The Saxon Stories, #13)
Plot holes abound- Athelstan, characterized as aggressively pious, ashamedly discusses his sin of pride with Uhtred but not his homosexuality. This historical fiction book was very modern in every character’s casual acceptance of the king’s sexuality which would have been wholly condemned by the church. It’s odd to make him openly gay and not address any of the implications there.
