This book is a tremendous disappointment so far. There is no reason this is written the way it is written with so many side characters joining in other than to give the writer another way to complain about society's ills.
Every side character is escaping a bigoted, intolerant, or abusive family and so far that seems to be their only purpose is to stick another complaint in the story.

Some serious errors about the foster care system. No foster kid ages out of custody without essential documents. If they come onto custody without them, the state ensures they are obtained.
Likewise, kids in foster care are unlikely to be at the center of a major custody battle. They're in custody because neither parent could care for them, not because the parents are fighting over them.
