Chapter 9 has me completely lost, I suspect a reread is quite in order, but we're in the rhythm of it now

Do Not try reading Thomas Pynchon as an audiobook if other options are available to you. just doesn't catch it well. i have finally caught up with a physical copy to where i was in the audiobook and it's much better this way.

A grotesquerie of american propaganda. also, I get the impression that Weir has not read a lot of scifi by women. particularly Le Guin. because it's wild to write "no one talks about the *really* hard part of communicating with an alien species: pronouns". like an idiot ignoring a 50 year old staple of speculative scifi. but hey, that would be "social commentary", which he dislikes in his fiction. so, no women.

Genuinely insufferable, I'm sorry to say. What if Asimov wrote for Marvel studios? What if the main character condescended to you sarcastically the whole time while trying to make the science make sense to plebian readers? What if you were just a straight white american guy who was kicked out of his field for being a dick but still universally agreed upon to be The Guy To Save The World? get fucked.

This is so dumb. I would love it so much if it were not mostly an edgelordfest of racism and queerphobia, and also if it were not based on The Origin of Consciousness And The Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind and trying to be clever with it, because it really does just come down to "ancient peoples and/or oral traditions are stupid and less capable than written traditions which engender consciousness".
