“Oh good heavens!” Miss Darlington threw up her hands impatiently. (Countess Feodora’s pearl ring slipped from her glove and rolled across the floor.) “This has gone far enough! Did I not raise you to be a proper scoundrel, Cecilia? Have you not been educated in the correct ways of ladylike piratism? Why are you even thinking of trying to do the right thing?”

“Yes,” Miss Darlington said. “Patrick, I’m sorry if you were hurt by me adopting you out, but the world makes love impossible for women sometimes, leaving us with no choice but loss and grief.” She shrugged. “Or rampant piracy.”

“What we need is female suffrage,” Cecilia opined as she laid lemon slices, cut into the shape of flowers, atop the tea.

“I’m not so sure about that,” Lady Armitage argued. “We suffer enough as it is.”

“It’s a common fault in men,” Lady Armitage said. She silently figured what angle the knife might take between her wrist and Signor de Luca’s heart. “Modern patriarchy shows a shameful lack of respect toward women.”
Cecilia nodded. “Only last month I robbed a man and tied him to his horse, and he did not bid me good afternoon as I sent him on his way.”

“No, Aunty believes too much education corrupts the delicate mind of young ladies. I received only the basic instruction at home—reading, writing, horse riding, navigation, weapons handling, piano, harp, the principles of burglary, geography, arithmetic, anatomy, metalwork, confidence trickery, history, battle tactics, dining etiquette.”

Havelock is Howl from Howls moving castle. Like almost identical I’m just waiting for him to bring out Calcifer.

Rough knuckles lifted to her cheek. “Why are you crying?” He crooned her first words to him with a look so warm and earnest she could see her Dougan staring out through his eyes. “Did you lose something?” The tears fell faster, harder, drenching the fingers he brushed against her face.

I’m already crying. Again. I also cried in the first chapter.

If a guy did any of this to me I’d burn his house down. But it’s ok because book boys get away with much much more than the real life ones.

If my friend complained to me about how her billionaire boyfriend tried to pay for everything even though she didn’t want him to I’d punch her in the face.

No wonder I wasn’t impressed with the book before this. Sloane is an utter b word.

I think it’s funny how the dark romance girls on YouTube talk about their favorite part of the book is when he sets a gas station on fire because the owners harassed her. And they are right it’s really freaking romantic.

I just highlighted basically the entire 16th chapter. I don’t know how I only had 6 annotations the first time I read this.

It’s that time of year again where I get sad and read this book.

“The panic subsided a bit more when the healer examined her and informed him that she had only a fever. Only. There was no “only” when it came to his wife. When the old woman had made that mistake, he’d scared her out of half the years she had left—and she didn’t have many to spare.”

I don’t think I’ve ever like a female lead in a romantasy novel. Except Emily Wilde but that books just different.

“Jessica, you are a pain in the arse, do you know that?” He scowled at her. “If I were not so immensely fond of you, I should throw you out the window.”
She wrapped her arms about his waist and laid her head against his chest. “Not merely ‘fond,’ but ‘immensely fond.’ Oh, Dain, I do believe I shall swoon.”

I think this reread is really for me emphasizing what a little romantic and emotional man Dain is.
