Could not finish because "Eight Bites" hit me too hard. Cried and cried and cried. Will return someday.

Woof it's a challenging read so far. I can't really picture the plant or Reactor 3 (which feels very important to conceptualizing the accident), I'm ashamed to admit all the Russian names and acronyms are blending together, and I don't feel that the nuclear physics and nuclear engineering elements have been adequately explained for the layperson. Taking a break for Bad Blood about Elizabeth Holmes.

This book is fucking terrifying. Because it's all so plausible and possible, and because she describes violence that is only new in its specific iterations, in the technology it uses. This has all happened before and is happening now. The human capacity for resiliency is mind boggling and maybe the closest thing to a miracle.

Octavia Butler is a prophetess and a genius. I was scared to start reading this because I knew it would hurt-- probably more than Parable of the Sower-- but I shouldn't have been. The text is so engaging that in spite of the difficult subject matter I have to force myself to put it down

It's 3am and I'm audibly sobbing for the Khoyniki Society of Hunters and all the animals they had to kill. Especially the poodle. And for the re-settlers for whom poisoned Iand was a refuge from violence and fear. I don't remember the last time I cried out loud like this. Everyone in this book speaks with poetry that comes through even in translation. Makes it hurt all the more.
