Oh my god there’s a new sideplot hello???

It’s starting to grow on me more, I just thought it would have more political intrigue. Then again, I haven’t read Romance of Three Kingdoms, which is what this book is based on, so I wouldn’t know.

I get that there’s a disclaimer saying it’s not based on Chinese myth… but everything is so close to your typical Chinese story with the sole exception of female-dominated political roles and the naming conventions that it drives me a little nuts. The mid-story twist was crazy work.

So far, the names are throwing me for a loop because there’s a lot and it’s not the traditional Chinese names, but it’s pretty interesting so far

An abrupt ending and a whole lot of focus on men, but it was a nice read with some interesting themes.

People are dying and things are heating up in the imperial palace but oh my godddd how are things going to end like this

This reminds me of A Daughter’s A Daughter even more, with shitty lovers and rebounds. A bit more dramatic here. Llewellyn’s POV is a strange shift. It’s way more dialogue heavy but with a lot of philosophy more than anything.

The first part was so heartbreaking? I think it hit somewhat close to home, though my experience wasn’t nearly as drastic. Still, the sentiments seeps through the words in a way that surprised me. I’m eager to read more. There’s a clear set up in the beginning of the first half, and it seems as though it’s following the same pattern as the storyline for A Daughter’s A Daughter by the same author.

Took a break to focus on studies, and coming back felt like a breath of fresh air. I wish there was more on Qi Zhuyin’s POV, but alas

wow they really just threw the romance at you like a brick going 70 mph. but their letters are heartbreaking. doomed yuri ftw

same general format but now there’s the slightest difference in the closeness of their interactions, but i like how it feels sort of monumental in the way that just their presences are slightly more tangible to each other feels like a relatively big shift

super interesting but pretty confused, a lot of the imagery is so fantastical that it’s hard to visualize it and the flowery writing doesn’t help that much with trying to wrap my head around it

that’s the ending????

So far it’s just a lot of interrogation after they found the corpse… not really anything too stimulating or exciting besides the inspector (not Poirot) asking questions and piecing together things as much as he could, which is fine to set up for figuring things out, but nothing’s really all that interesting and it’s all just dialogue after dialogue

From April 5, 2026: Reading this for the lady I'm providing companionship for at the hospice center; so far, it's a lot of dialogue that I can't wrap my head around well, but I think it's mainly just a lot of set up and characterization

lot of stuff you already know, just compiled into one book with some interview quotes

It really holds your hand through a lot of the themes and starts telling it to you explicitly. There’s none of that real dread that comes with it being set in the Nazi regime, and Isabelle’s actions going unpunished and really going in her favor don’t add many points for realism :”)

My lady and I are loving how things are picking up!! Unfortunately had to cut the visit short so close to the end because I ran out of time, but time will just make things more exciting

everyone in here is actually so disgusting rich it’s sickening, it’s very well written but oh my god the title wasn’t an exaggeration

Reading this for my lady in the hospice center. Turns out she’d read it before, but she forgot what happened, so wants to keep reading it. So far she really likes it and is interested in who did it. I share the same sentiment.
