I’ve had a terrible track record with books lately but this one just seems so weird and unique and I love it already. ugh but I don’t wanna get my hopes up.

So I think the author wants the most shock value possible so he just brings up rape at stupid moments

Why is this author so obsessed with children getting SA’d what??

I’m not sold on this narration style. I don’t like the third person omniscient that much. It’s very random which characters thoughts get focused on.

Am I supposed to like this character because he argued to a predator not to go after children but still decided not to stop him?

That’s a trope I love. Instruments are given to the characters with vague instructions about how they’ll be “fine” but to run when they see them go off. It’s just a great way to foreshadow and establish distrust towards those in charge.

This is one of those rare circumstances where I completely understand why the affair happened. Having her husband refuse a divorce over and over again, as he remained across the country, while BJK was struggling with being a lesbian with only other closeted gays to speak to about it, it totally makes sense. Then, add in the fact that Larry King’s own infidelity was never scrutinized.

Speaking to a Renee to learn more about trans women in sports shows a lot of intelligence on BJKs part, as friendly conversations are the most important part of understanding, and it’s better to assume you’re ignorant rather than assume you know everything. Considering this was the 1970s, Renee needed all the understanding she could get. This book is an incredible history of queer sports.

I love the subtle beef against Margaret. “So yeah I was breaking this record and winning this title, and oh by the way, *margaret* lost against my friend again.” And you know what, valid.

Do I watch the battle of the sexes match before or after I finish the book? Ugh! She described it so well.

The build up to the Bobby Riggs match is written so well. The book makes it worth your while to wait for that game. Because BJK knows that’s why people are reading her book.
