I am fully confused by the overwhelming amount of poor reviews, I've no idea what rating this book will end on but certainly not a 1 star

I thought, despairingly, that love didn't make cowards if us, after all; it made heroes, and heroes usually didn't survive.

*sigh* I'm going to finish this story..... mostly because I have an aversion to DNFing unless a book is truly horrendous. This story could have been great.... it's a unique premise. Unfortunately the author has leaned heavily on the "mate" trope for insta lust instead of any attempt at character development. While leaning far too heavily on "romance" to avoid any fleshed out magic system or world building.
