Keeping this at an arms length. It’s so well written that, while I’m not compelled to give it a pass (should it come to that) despite its evil aura, I’m… engaged at least. I don’t know. Hm.

Michael Joyce essay is impressively on topic and ironically reveals more intimately the way DFW grapples with the imposter syndrome thing than other essays where he might obliquely just state as much, which, naturally he still does.

Made a crack in the Lobster review about being done with DFW. Unfortunately he really got in my head so that turned out to not be the case lol. He can be a real shit but he was 1 of 1, man.

Buried Child (which I somehow missed in undergrad) left me shaking. Will get to the rest… eventually. Probably this week. Really incredible stuff. But. It’s A Lot.

Taking my sweet time with this (I found the first third um… challenging) but now at the conclusion of book two I can officially say I’ve gone from “struggling” to “appreciating” to “enjoying”

Enjoyed this first section. I appreciate how clinical and disaffected it all is, it makes the more meta dissections of true crime pop even more.

A little worried though because some of this first section wound itself in circles to the point of becoming a little dull. The authors got a great voice though so I’m hopeful it won’t lose me

Hm. I think I like this? Though admittedly it feels… amateurish at times. The last hundred pages aren’t paced quite right. It feels sluggish and geographic details seem hazy, all while moving from location to location at a breakneck pace. Strange. It is fun though, I can’t deny that. Also more credit where credit is due, I’m not cringing my way through this, Paolini really was a talented kid

It is my solemn promise that I will not at all refer to any social or political event from 2016-2020 in my final review, nor will I use the words “prescient” or “prophetic” unless referring to literal mechanizations of plot and/or character

Reserving final thoughts for the end but there’s a great chapter on Chaplin near the end of this
