Beginning to teach this book tomorrow! Can't wait!

I was enjoying it for awhile, but I really don't like Anne Lister (here, in Gentleman Jack, in general).

Almost done! My goal is to be finished before the semester begins!

Reading with my Upward Bound students. Hope they like it!

We are reading this in my lit class! Can't wait to discuss it tomorrow.

Are supposed to sympathize with Natasha? Because she's immature and a dick.

I'd be finished by now if I wasn't stopping every other page to Google the people and events. So fascinating.

Couldn't sleep last night, which was fine since I didn't want to stop reading this anyway. LOL

I think King needs to hang out with more teens. No one under 15 is named Rolf or Gerta. Even Gladys, for an adult, is super rare.

And the references these kids make? Literally unbelievable.

More errors. Where is the editor?! In a discussion about "urban fantasy," there was this gem discussing LoTR: "...the horrors J. R. R. Tolkien experienced in WWII" (374). Tolkien FAMOUSLY used the influence of WWI (that's one, singular) to create Middle Earth. There's also the strange editorial choice to have a historical fiction writer share "social commentary" about SF/fantasy.

I'm not sure I've ever rooted so hard for a character before. I am literally crying happy tears at a recent turn of circumstance for her.

Lots of issues with this. Blatant errors, e.g. attributing The Pigman to Richard Peck (it's Paul Zindel). Using the phrase "could care less" (it's couldn't care less). Including an essay by some woman named Patty Campbell who writes, "For a long while YA fiction depicted an all-white mostly middle-class world" (67), which is just not true.

Collins is very frustrating to read. She can make brilliant points and I sit back and think, "Yes, right, totally, spot on." Then she misspells the character Clair (not Claire) Huxtable while she's "analyzing" the character's sexuality with no supporting evidence. Just her opinion, with no evidence from episodes, dialogue, etc. She also shades the writers, perhaps unfairly, because of how they depict Clair.

Just get to the Battle for Hogwarts already.

Finished book 1, and I had forgotten how powerful this is. Maus is to me, the gold standard of graphic narrative. The illustrations, the stories within the story, the tragedy mixed with some humor--so well done.

This book is dragging. I'm trying to like it...but it's slow going.
