Why would I go to therapy when rereading Amberlough is such a balm to my mental health???

I LOVED this trilogy as a kid, but I never re-read it. Lately, I've found myself ruminating over my memories of it and I want to see if it stands up! : )

I've had to accelerate my reading queue on a bunch of books this past month due to library holds suddenly becoming available - there are worse problems to have! ; 3

This was in Storygraph's list of "Amberlough Read-Alikes" and idk how accurate that will be, but I'm always up for a sci-fi mystery/thriller!

Honestly I could just listen to the first hour and a half of this on repeat and be happy for the rest of my life

okay LISTEN after Amnesty that opening scene is just an absolute joy to re-experience and hearing Culpepper say that Cyril needs "less carrot, more stick" was just complete eyeballs emoji 👀 like GIRL YOU HAVE NO IDEA

So. The audiobook is read partly by Gideon Emery. And idk if I'm going to be able to focus on the actual book and not just hear "Nothing could be worse than the thought of living without you". But I'm willing to try. And if it makes me give up and romance Fenris again??? There are worse problems to have.

The amount of times I've already cried is only a testament to how emotionally-charged this trilogy has been and how incredibly great the author is at characters and their relationships. It's at least ten. I've already cried AT LEAST ten times in less than 100 pages. The suit fitting scene and the shaving scene had me full on sobbing in my car. And I SCREAMED "NO!" and instantly teared up at the Cordelia reveal.

Now that the one-week-checkout Libby audiobook is out of the way, I can finally get back to what really matters: WHERE IS CYRIL AND IS HE IN ENOUGH OF ONE PIECE TO HAVE A HEA WITH ARI?????????????

I do this Thing where if I think a piece of media aligns with my tastes too closely I put off experiencing it until the Perfect Time (which never comes). I did this with Amberlough. I drew it from my TBR jar and started the audiobook and WAS ACTUALLY SCREAMING IN MY CAR BECAUSE THIS IS JUST SO PERFECTLY MADE FOR ME. Y'all. Government spy x drug cartel kingpin who is also a stripper romance WITH A HEIGHT DIFFERENCE!!!

How do people read this series with their eyes?? The audiobook narrator is so amazing. He even acts out the CAT MEOWS. I listen just in absolute awe of his talent. Each and every character has such different and consistent voices. Give this man an award, please!

I wish publishing would just accept the New Adult age-range already. Add this to the list of teen books that were not written for teens. Fantasy strip clubs (that the text calls "taverns" for some reason????) and an almost constant threat of our MC being forced into sex work so far like wtf I though this was a romantasy YA duology?

Just from the dedication, I can tell this is going to be another one that hurts me so deliciously. Show me my damage, Sarah.
