so much of this is borderline unreadable BORING rehashed UNINTERESTING cultural analysis of rich white failsons and daughters. the most interesting parts are the RETVRN/frail doe love story half prose/half regurgitated meme chapters. at least those feel real and alive even if they make me roll my eyes. zzzzzzzzz

"The mouse made the man apply for a good job... The mouse made the man start a Roth IRA and invest in his 401k... The mouse made the man tell her he loved her." Maybe I need a mouse too.

Finally back to this one after a detour through Lerner & Hesse. Its less about Motherhood and more about coming to terms with a life. With all its branches, its paths, its possibilities both lost and taken. I don't have this issue. I wont have this issue. I still find this book therapeutic.

This is the first time I've understood the millennial impulse to abandon childrearing. But I'm happy the Zoomers still believe they can change the world (however unlikely that feels to me).

This is the second time Lerner has absolutely pulled me into the minutiae of life. Ill probably finish this tonight. His writing on educated urban psychosexual desires makes me feel so much at ease. Breathwork IS weird. Thank you for affirming that.

Lerner has done something incredible: he’s turned suburban White American overeducated overtherapized milieu into something deeply interesting. He’s united all the various 90s American threads into one big knot of clarity. He’s wrung out all the crucial points of Infinite Jest without losing the sincerity. The term glossolalia will stuck with me for some time. Very impressed.

The writing becomes so much more alive when Paul gets back to his endless stream of drug use. There’s an interesting conflict at the core of Paul and friends’ seemingly mundane tedium - that our conceptions of health are flawed if you assume that human connection is the height of existence [and emotionally damaged folks might need damaging medicine to be healthy]. I think Im getting the hype now.

most of this is dreary and boring bc of lins detached aloof voice. but “then moved chips and guacamole onto his lap … and focused on steadily eating while repeatedly thinking ‘eating chips and guacamole’” made me belly laugh. hell yeah dude
