A hard book to read, because the story is so damn hard to bear ...

I read this book in 1993, and loved it, was fascinated by the ease with which he wrote of his life and his family, the joys and challenges, and sorrows, of childhood. A gifted writer. If anyone is looking for a book to read, offering windows into an age long gone, yet an elemental part of the American Story, this is the book for you.
