Charlotte Brontë seems to have a habit of contriving Tom & Jerry like coincidences to surprise her readers though it becomes predictable after a while. Nevertheless, of all books I've started reading, this is the only one that has held my interest throughout.

Human beings go through a camel phase during which they carry all the foolish prejudices society burdens them with. Then comes the lion's phase, when they fight against all such prejudices. But there's another phase only a few achieve: the childhood phase. It's the highest phase, which requires one to consider life with the naïveté of a child, to be open to all kinds of influences, to find one's lost innocence again.

Can't decipher the motives and actions (or rather, eccentricities) of the characters except Úrsula, who is the only 'rational' being.
Interesting book, nonetheless.

This is depressing. Now I don't have heart to read the last fifty pages.
I already didn't have much faith in Oma/Uma's goodness still didn't know she would turn out to be such a churail!

Each profession, intellectual or manual, deserves consideration, whether it requires painful physical effort or manual dexterity, wide knowledge or the patience of an ant.
