I remember well how my mother asked me why I couldn’t be a nice boy like you Wilfred; but I would think to myself that Wilfred, for being so nice and quiet, often stayed hungry. So early in life, I had learned that if you want something, you had better make some noise.

If you read a holocaust book and become teary in bafflement how could people be burned in gas chambers, see this - that's how

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CyyYWG...

12 family members burned (heat stiffened? pugilistic attitude? mummified?) by the relentless bombing of the mighty states of America and Israel.
This is beyond vile, evil, inhuman and disgusting
This genocide must stop.

Awestruck by the genius and tremendous knowledge of Quratulain Haider. She must be extremely well-read.

Charlotte Brontë seems to have a habit of contriving Tom & Jerry like coincidences to surprise her readers though it becomes predictable after a while. Nevertheless, of all books I've started reading, this is the only one that has held my interest throughout.

Human beings go through a camel phase during which they carry all the foolish prejudices society burdens them with. Then comes the lion's phase, when they fight against all such prejudices. But there's another phase only a few achieve: the childhood phase. It's the highest phase, which requires one to consider life with the naïveté of a child, to be open to all kinds of influences, to find one's lost innocence again.

"Do I have to wait until I'm an old man in order to express what I think?"

"Before you can express everything you think, your children's grandchildren will be old. We live in the age of the secret and of fear. You must have two faces. Show one to the crowd and keep the other for yourself and your Creator. If you want to keep your eyes, your tongue and your ears, forget that you have them. "

Can't decipher the motives and actions (or rather, eccentricities) of the characters except Úrsula, who is the only 'rational' being.
Interesting book, nonetheless.

This is depressing. Now I don't have heart to read the last fifty pages.
I already didn't have much faith in Oma/Uma's goodness still didn't know she would turn out to be such a churail!

Mawdo, man is one: greatness and animal fused together. None of his acts is pure charity. None is pure bestiality.
I am stripping myself of your love, your name. Clothed in my dignity, the only worthy garment, I go my way.
Goodbye.

Each profession, intellectual or manual, deserves consideration, whether it requires painful physical effort or manual dexterity, wide knowledge or the patience of an ant. Ours...does not allow for any mistake. You don't joke with life, and life is both body and mind. Teachers-at kindergarten level, as at university level-form a noble army accomplishing daily feats, never praised, never decorated.

Try explaining to them that a working woman is no less responsible for her home...that nothing is done if you do not step in...Others, limited in their way of thinking, envied my comfort and purchasing power. They would go into raptures over the many 'gadgets' in my house: gas cooker, vegetable grater, sugar tongs. They forgot the source of this easy life; first up in the morning, last to go to bed, always working.

You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness, who was getting muddled.
'Well, who knows,' he replied.
'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently
'I protest!', Behemoth (cat) exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky's immortal!'
Your identification cards, citizens,' said citizeness.
Good gracious, this is getting ridiculous! A writer is defined by not any identity card, but by what he writes.

There was now a white bow-tie on the cat's neck, and a pair of ladies' mother-of-pearl opera glasses hung from a strap on his neck. What's more, the cat's whiskers were gilded.
'Why have you gilded your whiskers'? exclaimed Woland. And what the devil now you need the bow tie for when you are not even wearing trousers?
'A cat is not supposed to wear trousers', replied the cat with great dignity.
