A book so nice, I'm reading it twice

We have our first reference to the Viashino

I'm finally past the contemporary fiction portion and into the fantasy! Loving it quite a bit, but unfortunately, my library hold has expired, and this book is quite popular, so I'm taking a forced pause while I wait for my turn with it again

This is perhaps the most difficult book I've ever read. The chapters are insanely short (I'm talking 2-5 pages on average) but I can only stomach about 2 of them per day. If I weren't reading this at the request of a friend, I'd have dropped it long ago.

A number of the patrons were gathered around a table, watching as two of their compatriots played a card game which represented the fighting of magic users, the onlookers ignoring the new arrivals, so intent were they on the duel being fought out with the cards.

Karn doubted she obtained the comfort she sought: his body had a similar heat to a human's, but he could not offer her the same softness of flesh. He enjoyed her proximity anyway. His friends were so small and so mysterious. He could divine the inner workings of quartz, but still he would never perfectly understand Jhoira.

Jodah opened his mouth. Jaya lit two fireballs in her hands, weighed them, and raised her eyebrows at Jodah. Jodah, abashed, closed his mouth.
After a moment, he spoke, mild: "I was going to say that this is an excellent plan."

Weirdly nervous is one of her types, actually. She likes men at the extremes of self-assurance, men who know what they want and are either confident they can have it or terrified they can’t; she can imagine being into this guy.

Hugo looked at Antonio with a tearful face, the same one that Hugo had been giving him since they were children, and it still infuriated Antonio that he could neither make his brother tougher nor make the world kinder.

Took me ages to get past the first few chapters… such is the way with non-fantasy novels for me. But thankfully it’s finally getting interesting
