This is not a thriller! This is a literary fiction disguised as a thriller.

Patch is the worst.

What am I reading? Is this romantasy or erotic fiction with a pinch of fantasy? I am so confused right now lol. I’m 40% in and I still can’t figure it out. The plot and world building is super deep and confusing and I’m struggling to following along and then all of a sudden - drop everything and we have a five page spread over the most detailed smut scene. What is happening lol 😂 what is the plot? Idk

I feel like this book is suffering from second book syndrome. I hope it picks up

It’s just starting to get good - which isn’t a great start to a 7+ book series. A series needs to be good from book one - imo

Interesting idea. Red Queen meets Hunger games.

However, I’m struggling with the banter, and dialogue. It feels immature and kinda basic. And I don’t think it’s because it’s a YA, but rather the authors herself lacks experience.

Slow start but it’s picking up. Pretty complicated magical system so it was a lot of info dumping at the beginning.

Over half way. Kinda struggling with the main plot line because it’s so unbelievable. But I love this author so I’ll see it through to the end

I see a lot of romance fantasy books attempt enemies to lovers trope but the male interest is perfect so the only way to hold true to that trope is the make the main female lead dumb and judgmental. I have seen this done well (Sjm) but most authors fall short and it’s painful to read

I am currently in book two so not quite 1/2 through the series. I went into this book blind. I had no idea what it was about or even the genre. It’s contemporary romance and some of the tropes I am seeing:
- boss and assistant romance
- grumpy/ sunshine
And this quote sums it up perfectly:
“I’m the foolish farm girl who ate up every word he fed to me, right down to the part about us being different.

Ok I can tell already this so going to be a five star read. Worth the hype.

Very interesting idea. Love this author, I love her other books more but I am still enjoying one.

Having to take a break. I’m so sick of all the smutty fantasy books. The plot takes a backseat.

I now understand where the horrible gender roles come from. It comes from children books like this one.

Wendy literally has an arrow sticking out of her chest and her younger brothers and the lost boys wonder when she will wake up and make them supper.

I’m not loving the character interaction between h and H. It feels forced and reminds me of two pre tweens talking to the opposite sex for the first time.

Hopefully, the character development and dialogue will improve.

This book hits close to home, as someone who has grown up in the Mormon faith and I have been told my entire life that polygamy is practiced in Heaven. To which I respond:

He didn’t convince her cause she was a Mormon. He could have convince any child. That’s what kidnappers do all the time. It’s called brainwashing.

I typically never record rereads but since I plan to finish the entire series this year I decided to record my reread on outlander.

Pausing to read this until I get my digital copy from the library, but I love it so far.

I was super confused in the beginning but now it’s just getting interesting. I see why Dune is such an influential book.

I have read the first book and I’m just starting book two.

And I’m not sure if I’ll keep reading. The story is slow moving and parts of it are pretty dated (poor use of word choice like “retarted”).

Also, main character is a caddy b*tch and unless she gets a drastic personality change this book series will shortly become a DNF.

How does it have so many 5 star reviews?
