Leah is starting Iron Winter (Northland, #3)
Stephen Baxter does these awesome afterwards about his research. Gotten a lot of nonfiction from him and his extensive reading shows. He's paralleled or extensively thought through every detail that goes into this iron-age glacially dominated era. In this version, Jesus doesn't die in his thirties and Christianity's influence spread in a much different way. But I think I'm missing a lot of historian in-jokes.

I think someone complained about how these books always have more mysteries than solutions in them, so Lemony Snicket was all "fine then" and wrote a book with more solutions than mysteries WHICH IS WAY MORE FRUSTRATINGLY MYSTERIOUS. "Frustratingly" is a word which here means "we should all emulate Daniel Handler because of how well he handles Snicket's case files to provoke reader reactions"

Put it down for a while because it was a beautiful dark perfect downer, but taken up again with anticipation, and a distraction.

"Any west-to-east traverse of the Olympics or Cascades drives home the real picture of depth and intricate contour along the route traveled.
The skirts of the two great ranges billow out east and west for many miles and are pleated into folds that define major drainage patterns."

Very dense and slow-going, because it is SO thorough. Excellent resource and history.

Leah is reading The Valley of Amazement
I really hate it when I get a slow book from the library, because it's due before I'm done and then I usually forget to pick up the book for another couple years. This one will keep me coming back though.

Leah is reading The Science of Discworld (The Science of Discworld, #1)
This reading is going slowly because it is too interesting: I make it a couple pages then become so excited that I have to take a joyful squealing break and then consider All of Science (full hard-soft spectrum plus communication/practical application strategies) for 20 minutes or so before getting back to it. And the cycle repeats.

reading this while occassionally moseying to The Science of Discworld, I am incoherent with delight due to understanding things and clever physics/astronomy jokes...that I also understand (rather newly)

Facing the fact at last that this is *not* a bedtime read. Poetry this cerebral (and if not cerebral then disturbing) doesn't lend itself to sleepytime.

I love this. I love it so much I am afraid to keep reading; I so badly want good things for all these characters and the world is such that their struggles will not go away. And I also want this book to never end because I want to hang out and get to know everyone. Probable consequence is an immediate reread.

Leah is reading Great Tales and Poems
I got halfway through "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and then got so bored I looked it up to see if there was some sort of clever contemporary deal I was missing. Not really--as explained, the story is pretty much Poe ranting about how much the media screws up when rushing to report on and make a sensation about crimes. That's cool, EAP--I totally agree. And I'm skipping the rest of your boring story.

Having an excellent time with rereading: Mary Doria Russell, Terry Pratchett, David Rakoff, Irvine Welsh.

Also, Janet Evanovich writes pretty decent cake, though sometimes the frosting ruins it for me (set it in modern times, please, your prose does not stand up to more, you know I love you anyway though)
