I've come to realize that the problematic aspects of authors is not something that puts me off, rather it seems to be my main drive towards them. It's almost like watching serial killer documentaries with the caveat that their problematic elements are fairly minor in comparison (as far as I know). Must also be why I've been reading so many french "auteurs" like, they are by definition slightly problematic.
