The book opens by describing Stalin and his wife Nadya's history and relationship. Also, Stalin's upbringing and younger days as a counter revolutionary. The relationships of those at the top are incestuously intertwined. Couple this with unbridled cruelty and it's something that is hard to read but can't be put down.

Honestly hoping Gore Vidal reappears. I kind of don't want to continue the book now that Maurice is leaving the Italian Villa. Definitely makes me want to hang out on the Mediterranean with some tanned Italianas.
