The last chapter in part one…oh my, it was hard to read!

“Once more,” returned Chan, “I call to your attention that much unused virtue, patience. Aspect will be brighter here now. A woman’s touch-“

Caroline smiled when he asked after her, and assured him that she was quite well. She did not say that when she opened the door she felt as though she might fall out, might tumble into the gaping emptiness of the prairie without manmade structures to anchor her. She did not say that the sky was just too dizzyingly huge for her to look at.

The DJ on my book is by Mircea Vasiliu. He did a lot of Elizabeth Cadell’s book covers and he is my personal favorite.

Loving this book, but the print is so tiny!

Really enjoying this one.

“They baked hams for the poor at Christmas and made flower arrangements for funerals and weddings. On special occasions they took their daughters to Memphis, where they stayed at the Peabody Hotel and drank gin fizzes and watched the ducks come and go from the pond inside the lobby.”

Pond???

This is very slow going, not sure I’ll stick with it.

She knew the real god in this town- and his name was Money.

Oh no!

And, more disquietingly, came the inevitable following thought: 'If they were really made for me, then my coming here must have been planned for some time. But-why? Why would they especially want me?

A fair question!

"You will want to keep your eyes closed when we pass the Temple, lest you see the Jacobite heads on Temple Bar."

Despite the heads, I think she's enjoying his company.

"I myself possess a very high level of intelligence. You have doubtless already remarked it."

Not sure how intelligent but she certainly wins the obnoxious award!

This is really good!

"The Romans put up lights all around the coast, you know. I believe their name for 'em was 'pharos.' They almost all were wrecked by our charming English weather, but promptly put up again. We think our old tower was restored in the fourteenth century."

Gasping, he snatched determinedly for the reticule. Unhappily, he retrieved it upside down. Coins rolled in all directions; a pencil, notepad, card case, chain purse, handkerchief, a brush, an advertisement for cucumber lotion, a pair of scissors, a brooch, two letters, a pot of rouge, a scone wrapped in paper, a flea comb, and a carrot were scattered about the flagway. A hand mirror shattered as did a vial of scent.

"The message is from E. Tummet. And it says, 'Please to 'elp 'im find Cap'n Rossiter,' on account of which gent I lost me sovereign nation-er, sittyation, that is, melady. And got one 'o me daylights darkened."

This guy is a hoot!
