Impossible to put down.
The previous person who borrowed it from the library must have been eating honey while they read it.
Also, intriguing read so far.
Now, I want honey. . . .

Finished the actual book, reading some of the literary criticism at the end. Fuller review may come. . .

“Since now learn otherwise. Sometimes the man who looks happiest in town, with the biggest smile, is the one carrying the biggest load of sin. There are smiles and smiles; learn to tell the dark variety from the light.”

I find my reactions to the book, the story, the writing and weird words and odd syntactical spectacle, to be the same I’d have watching an actual freak show.

On Volume 3. I think part of why it’s interesting is that it’s from the villain’s perspective. It allows for what are, I think, the more usual happenings in a criminal investigation: the investigators mostly do research, which takes time, and wait for the criminal to make mistakes. Not very interesting to watch or read. But the villain constantly evades justice, commits crimes, and any step might be a mistake.

Rereading for a lit class I’m teaching. SO good. Ah, this book draws me in like few others do. The narrative style, the characters, the protagonist’s limited yet wise perspective and the tension built through what, in a lesser author, would be dull thought analysis, and the beautiful and simple themes make it a great work of art.

Love the British humour intermixed with the dark story. The tone is that of a doctor describing a disturbing medical condition in rich detail and great enthusiasm while tangenting often to things almost unrelated and much less dark.
