7 months into this book and I’ve only managed reading the first third. This book is so painful. I’m really not a fan of short stories (I’m told this is not a collection of short stories though, but it sure as feels like it is…) and there’s no way to make any connection with or between any of the characters introduced so far. TBH I’ve forgotten most of them already. Fingers crossed there is a story coming!

The first half of the book was definitely a pain to read. Very slow setup for the real story (if there is one to come...).
Aprupt story telling and introduction of new concepts, it's all so stiff and disjointed.
Whole chapters are dedicated to background stories of characters (recounted to other characters for no apparent reason). It just seems like such a lazy way to "build" a character. It really lacks a plot.

Page 148: so far, I’m not enjoying this book and I’m quite confused why it was hyped so much. I had high hopes.
Admittedly, I knew nothing about China’s Cultural Revolution in the 1960, where this book started and that was interesting to read about (although I hadn’t expected history lessons from a SF book) but now it’s just vague science lessons and flat characters. I don’t get it?!
Let’s see…
