The history of the Jeju people is horrific. I would not be able to get through it without the interwoven relationships Lisa See has created in her stories. Lisa See you have tugged all my heartstrings, ripped them out and then stitched them back into to place with the determination of a woman’s courage.

I have to pause here and reflect on the historical time here. Nations ruling over nations rules the way we perceive our own people. There’s a lot to take in and we as humans just want to live our ordinary lives.

It’s interesting to read Anne’s views on Queen Elizabeth turning 18. And there were pandemics! Reading this in our time is so very interesting and unique. I am thinking so much of our friends and family in Ukraine and China who have these battles now. Americans have had it pretty safe. I can empathize with her constantly saying, “I wish this would end.”

I want to be friends with the characters in this book
