I was skeptical of a new spin off series, particularly since I love the Skandians so much, but this has been really good. A little slower that the Ranger’s Apprentice books, more like a slice of life for the boys growing up in Hallasholm. It reminds me of Horace’s training in Battle School. This book is focused on the Skandian equivalent, so it has a similar feel to if we had followed Horace instead of Will.

I give up. Just can’t seem to get into this one.

For a book with such a dark premise, at almost 200 pages in, not a whole lot has happened. Lots of talking. And meeting. And talking. I’m not doing this for three more books.

Actually, I’m really liking this take on the story.

This book is freaking terrifying. Seriously. Who writes this stuff for KIDS?!? But it IS super good! I’m loving it just- holy smokes, no. Do not give this to children. Or at least not without the expectation of some serious nightmares. I’m stopping for the night and I’m going to go watch something happy before bed.... To be continued tomorrow!

I’m really liking this book. Very interesting look into the chocolate industry.
