As his story unfolds we recognise large cases that he worked on; Stephen Lawrence, Rachel Nickell’s. These are cases that I remember reading about and to see them from his perspective is fascinating. Dr Shepherd is brutally honest about his home life which balances out the intensity of detail of his work.

Despite the difficulty of the topic it’s actually really easy to read. I hate blood and gore but the descriptions in this are almost poetic at times. For example “the gall bladder is not just green, it is the green of jungle foliage”.

I’m finding that it’s just the right level of detail in terms of pathology accompanied by his personal memories.
